I'm applying to the bank of England for a licence to print money
Spectator, The, Feb 16, 2002 by Fildes, Christopher
I'm applying to the Bank of England for a licence to print money
THIS is the opportunity of a lifetime. I am going to buy the Bank of England's printing works at leafy Debden, in Essex. It will be a licence to print money.
How am I going to pay for it? Cash down, in banknotes, of course. I shall run some more off. Having struggled for centuries to establish this lucrative monopoly, the Bank may be ready to part with it, for it is too good not to share.
We have kept the costs down, says Mike Thompson, who runs the works, but what we have not been able to do is increase volume.
The presses at Debden can produce more notes than their only customer needs, and Mr Thompson is not allowed to fill them up by competing for work in the open market against other printers.
So the Bank is wondering whether the presses should be privatised. Then they could go on printing notes for the Bank, under contract, but would be free to get new orders from new customers - running off prospectuses, freesheets, soap coupons and so on.
None of these would be anything like so well worth printing as banknotes. Tucked away in the Bank's published accounts, the results of the Issue Department tell the story of Britain's most profitable nationalised industry.
They show an income of £1,635 million and expenses of £51 million - the cost of printing the notes, issuing them, looking after them, paying them and burning them. (The furnaces heat the premises.) Net proceeds: £1,584 million.
If this business was valued on a par with De La Rue, the banknote printer, it would be worth £12 billion, but I hope to get it for less.

How to be poor in spite of being rich...
With all the cheating and sucking, Telecom Italia should be so rich to be able to rule our country.
Instead it is so poor that it RULES our country.
And it reaches that particular and priviledged condition in two main ways.
First: Sucking and stealing like the few others ( ENEL, ITALGAS, FERROVIE)
Second: Making huge revenues that disappear in the pockets of our politicians.
Most would have included Mediaset in the "others", but this is not the case.
Because Mediaset doesn't need to be bancrupty.
That is they suck and steal, but the money doesn't disappear.
It goes officially in the pockets of Berlusconi.
That is why it doesn't need to be in red...

Come diventare ricco (facilmente)
E fanno enormi profitti...

Who is born square will not die round...
When imagination circles around the wheel of faith the mind bends reality to fit the paradigm.
As Dr. Pangloss concluded, we have spectacles because we have noses.
It's not an uncommon condition.
And in Italy we have Berlusconi because we have Mediaset.
And we have Mediaset because we like soaps, football games, stupid movies and stupid entertainment.
If we liked something else we would have somebody else...

The many flavours of the Internet
The Internet comes in many flavours.
The most important is freedom.
Freedom is a word with many meanings.
I am free to shout and say everything I like in my house, but my freedom is a limited one in this case.
If I shout on the Net, my freedom is as big as the audience of the mean I choose.
A blog has to reach many to bring a real freedom.
Besides this the Internet CAN really be one of the few means that nowaday are really free, because it is cheap, and cheap means reachable by most of the users.
This is the revolutionary side of the Internet.
Many say there is not anymore a free Media.
It is not true.
What we really lack is free journalists.
That is why in the news, on TV, in he Movies we just see and hear lies.
And these lies try to brainwash us.
This is also why we have to keep the freedom on the Net, whatever is its cost.
If for saying what I think I had to buy space in a newspaper or on TV, I wouldn't have freedom.
Freedom wouldn't exist, because the only ones who could afford to talk would be the ones with money and power.
And that is exactly the case of the media.
Thanks to the Internet I can have my personal Blog and write on it and have an audience and tell my thoughts.
This is such a sweet and delicious flavour...
